Findings of a Foster:
Author: Rachel OlivieriDate: 7/24/2020 Hi, everyone! Marketing Director Rachel O here! I hope you all have had a good week - my goodness is the weather hot here in Virginia! This week, I wanted to talk with you about something amazing - PUMPKIN! On top of being the best kind of pie and also signifying Fall (my favorite season) and Halloween (and COOLER WEATHER), pumpkin has some pretty amazing health benefits for your pets! First, my experience: Ash and Aggron, our two sweet foster kittens, have been having poop at opposite ends of the spectrum: Aggron was having mushy, almost diarrhea-like poop, and Ash would go 3+ days without a BM. It was stressful constantly worrying about cleanup while also trying to stimulate Ash to go! Since Aggron's fecal test came back negative for parasites, we didn't need to put him on any medication. I started adding a small amount of canned pumpkin to the kittens' slurry, and within 24 hours, we had results! Aggron's poop was formed and solid, and Ash pooped on her OWN! I've continued to add a little bit of pumpkin to their food, and we've had consistently good poops! Now, the science: According to 1-800-PetMeds, "If your [pet] has diarrhea, the soluble fiber in canned pumpkin will help absorb the excess water, resulting in firmer stool. For a pet that is constipated, the high water and fiber content in the pumpkin will help add bulk and soften the stool, acting as a natural laxative and making the stool easier to pass." It is kind of the best of both worlds! There are SO many ways to add pumpkin to your pet's diet! You can mix it in with their regular food or bake it into a treat - there are a lot of dog-friendly recipes that use pumpkin! Thank you for taking the time to read this week's post - I'll leave you with some adorable pictures of Ash and Aggron. They're getting SO big! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! -Rachel O **Please remember to consult your vet before adding / changing your pet's diet** |
