Findings of a Foster

Episode Four - Dawn

Hi, everyone! I hope that you all had a nice weekend! I am absolutely ready for some cooler weather!

I wanted to talk this week about something amazing that many of you probably have in your own homes, that helps kill fleas on our most vulnerable fosters - Dawn Dish Soap!

When Ash and Aggron first came to me, I flea-combed them and found - you guessed it - fleas.  Fleas can cause anemia and all sorts of issues on teeny tiny kittens, and unfortunately, flea shampoos / topical / oral products are meant for kittens who are much older (typically 8 weeks / 2 pounds or more).

So, I gave them a bath using Dawn Dish Soap! Dawn kills fleas pretty much on contact, and you can use it on teeny tiny, 2 week old kittens like Ash and Aggron. You use the Dawn as the 'shampoo' for the bath, scrubbing it all over the kittens' bodies (PRO TIP: when you first get started, use the Dawn and scrub around the kittens' necks to create a 'collar' of Dawn - it'll stop fleas in their tracks as they try to move toward the kittens' head / face). Then, you let it sit for a moment, flea comb the kittens (putting any fleas you catch into a cup of soapy Dawn water), rinse the kittens, dry them VERY well, and then repeat the process daily until you don't find any more fleas (this can take 3 - 5 days or more).

I have used Dawn on multiple dog and cat fosters, and have had great success! Although it doesn't prevent fleas from returning (which is why it is SO important to keep your animals on flea / tick preventatives), it does kill adult fleas living on your pets.

I'll leave you with some pictures of Ash and Aggron from last week, post-bath. While they don't have any fleas currently, they are very messy eaters and we want to make sure they stay nice and clean!

Thank you for reading!!
